Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue What's Included in the Demo

Prologue through To the Forest—missions, monsters, camps, and what stops before Forest Findings.

What's Included in the Demo

The Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo is a curated slice of the retail campaign, not a bespoke training mode with alternate balance. Capcom included enough story, locales, and systems for newcomers to understand what a full hunt feels like, while stopping before mid-Chapter 1 content that would spoil later reveals. Everything below reflects the August 5, 2026 release build and matches the endpoint described across Capcom’s official materials: Chapter 1-3 To the Forest.

Story coverage

The demo opens with the prologue sequences that introduce the hunter, handler Alma, and the expedition framing Wilds’s ecological mystery. You transition into Chapter 1 on the Windward Plains, establish the first base camp rhythm, and progress through early mandatory missions until the narrative sets up the Scarlet Forest investigation.

The final included story beat is To the Forest, where the party prepares to push deeper into forest territory and learn about Field Surveys as a mission type. When that mission completes, the demo ends—Forest Findings, the next main mission in retail, is not playable in the demo. Our To the Forest walkthrough explains objectives and the exact stopping point; Forest Findings documents what comes next for players who import a save into the full game.

Side quests and optional field content within unlocked regions generally remain available until the demo hard-stops at To the Forest. You cannot access assignments tied to locales or systems locked behind retail-only flags.

Areas and travel

Windward Plains is fully explorable within demo mission gating. You ride the Seikret, learn map navigation, and interact with the primary early camp. The Scarlet Forest appears in cutscenes and setup during To the Forest, but the extended forest loop—including pop-up camp tutorials and Wudwud interactions from Forest Findings—requires the full game.

Fast travel, tent rest, and item management work as in retail for unlocked regions. Weather and time-of-day systems operate so you can practice preparation before harder hunts in the complete version.

Monsters and hunts

Demo players fight the early large monsters tied to included assignments—most notably the Chatacabra introduction during Desert Trotters and subsequent Chapter 1 targets tied to Plains progression. You learn wirebug-adjacent mobility tools, focus mode basics, and part-breaking rewards without facing high-rank modifiers or late-game elder dragons.

Monsters exclusive to Forest Findings and beyond—such as Lala Barina and Congalala in the retail Chapter 1-3 continuation—do not appear as mandatory demo hunts. Reading our Forest Findings guide previews those fights for importers who continue immediately after transfer.

Systems and features included

The demo exposes core loops Capcom wants every buyer to understand:

  • Weapon forging and upgrades at the smithy for available trees
  • Armor crafting within low-rank material pools
  • Palico equipment management at appropriate progression points
  • Item crafting and camp meals where unlocked by missions
  • Scoutflies and tracking for main assignments
  • Photo / survey tools introduced in early Chapter 1 where missions require them

Excluded or limited systems mirror retail locks: online multiplayer, SOS flares, Gathering Hub social space, high-rank expeditions, endgame grinding, and post-story updates are absent because the demo is offline and story-truncated.

What is deliberately excluded

Understanding exclusions clarifies why the install size (~26 GB PC, ~20 GB PS5) is smaller than the full game while still substantial:

  • Missions after To the Forest, beginning with Forest Findings
  • Later Chapter 1 hunts such as Balahara apex content and beyond
  • Additional locales (Iceshard Cliffs, Oilwell Basin, Ruins of Wyveria, etc.)
  • Online connectivity and co-op
  • Live title updates and event quests tied to retail servers

If a feature requires continuous online validation or story flags past the demo endpoint, assume it is unavailable.

Save transfer and continuity

Progress through included missions can carry into retail on the same platform when no full save exists. Imported saves reflect the demo endpoint—To the Forest complete, Forest Findings not started. Read save data transfer before assuming optional side content transfers identically across patches.

Planning your session length

Most players finish the mandatory demo path in three to six hours, depending on weapon experimentation and optional gathering. Speedrunners can clear faster; newcomers who read Desert Trotters and craft extra potions may spend longer.

Use system requirements to avoid hardware surprises, download steps for install sizing, and the demo hub when you need a single index of all demo topics.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What is the last mission in the Prologue Demo?

Chapter 1-3 To the Forest is the final playable mission. After it completes, the demo ends. Forest Findings—the next story mission with Lala Barina and Congalala—exists only in the full retail game.

Can I play Forest Findings in the demo?

No. Forest Findings begins immediately after To the Forest in retail but is outside the demo boundary. Our Forest Findings walkthrough describes that mission for players continuing after save transfer.

Which areas are explorable?

Windward Plains is the primary open region during demo missions. Scarlet Forest content beyond setup cutscenes in To the Forest requires the full game. You cannot access later Wilds locales in the demo.

Does the demo include multiplayer?

No. The Prologue Demo is offline only. SOS flares, online hub features, and co-op hunts are excluded. All included missions are solo against the offline story flow.

Will my demo progress include optional quests?

Optional quests completed before To the Forest generally carry over on eligible save transfers, but only within demo-unlocked content. Anything requiring retail-only flags cannot exist in a demo-origin save.
