Weapon Tier List

This Monster Hunter Wilds weapon tier list reflects Title Update 4 balance as of the Prologue Demo period. Rankings prioritize solo efficiency, hunt time, survivability, and how cleanly each weapon uses the Seikret dual loadout against early monsters like Chatacabra, Lala Barina, and Congalala. Every weapon remains viable—TU4 buffs closed most gaps—so tiers describe comfort and speed, not permission to play a class.

Tier List Overview

TierWeaponsSummary
SLong Sword, Bow, Great Sword, GunlanceBest damage uptime, reach, or burst with minimal gear dependency
ASword & Shield, Hammer, Switch Axe, Charge Blade, Insect GlaiveStrong with moderate skill or setup; excellent in specific matchups
BDual Blades, Lance, Light Bowgun, Heavy BowgunCompetitive but narrower or gear-hungry; still clear all demo content

S Tier — Long Sword, Bow, Great Sword, Gunlance

Long Sword earns S tier for its combination of mobility, counter windows, and sustained spirit gauge damage. Against Chatacabra’s hop patterns and Lala Barina’s aerial flips, Long Sword players reposition quickly while maintaining high slash damage on weak wings and head. TU4 improved key counter rewards, making missed timing less punishing than in launch week.

Bow dominates ranged safety in the offline demo where you cannot depend on party aggro control. Charge levels, arc shots, and coating flexibility let you snipe Congalala’s head while avoiding ground clouds. Pair Bow as a secondary on a melee Seikret loadout for almost any expedition.

Great Sword remains the king of single-hit burst. Demo hunts are short enough that one well-placed charged slash during a mount or trap window deletes large health chunks. The tradeoff is commitment; learn monster roars and slams via our Chatacabra guide before maining Great Sword.

Gunlance combines guard-friendly shell damage with sharpness-independent bursts. TU4 shelling adjustments made wide and long variants more consistent on mobile targets like Doshaguma cubs in the full game and on Lala Barina when it skitters sideways. Gunlance fits players who want heavy defense without Lance’s strict spacing.

A Tier — Reliable Specialists

Sword & Shield offers the best entry to status and item use while attacking. Hammer delivers K.O. pressure for mount opportunities. Switch Axe and Charge Blade reward mode management with explosive payoff once phials and bottles are online. Insect Glaive vaults over small monsters and maintains elemental dust uptime—strong when you master kinsect marks.

These weapons sit one tier below S not because they fail hunts, but because they ask for more practice or build investment before matching S-tier clear times in Tempered content. In the Prologue Demo’s limited gear pool, they still feel excellent.

B Tier — Niche but Viable

Dual Blades demand constant aggression and sharpness management; demon mode windows are lethal when mastered but fragile during Lala Barina poison phases without gear. Lance and Gunlance occupy different skill floors—Lance is safer at range but slower to kill in solo timed quests. Light Bowgun and Heavy Bowgun require ammo and recoil tuning; HBG especially wants late-game mods to feel as smooth as Bow.

TU4 explicitly targeted underperforming kits so B-tier weapons are “slower S-tier,” not traps. If you main Dual Blades or Lance, keep them—artifact weapons and decorations matter more than list placement.

Seikret Dual Loadout Synergy

Tier rankings shift slightly when you plan primary plus secondary together:

  • Great Sword + Bow: S-tier burst plus S-tier safety.
  • Long Sword + Gunlance: S-tier sustained damage plus shell finishers on downed monsters.
  • Hammer + Sword & Shield: A-tier stun setup with A-tier follow-up.

How We Rank for the Prologue Demo

Demo hunts lack online flinch coordination and end before late-game armor skills appear. We weight weapons that perform with stock forge gear, tolerate offline aggro, and teach fundamentals transferable to Doshaguma packs later. Patch notes after TU4 moved several weapons upward; revisit this page when Capcom ships Title Update 5.

For input timing that tier placement assumes, configure controls via PC Controls or console equivalents, and stabilize FPS using Best PC Settings so counter and dodge windows stay consistent.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What weapons are S tier after Title Update 4?

Long Sword, Bow, Great Sword, and Gunlance sit at S tier for solo efficiency and early-game clear speed. TU4 buffs strengthened several mid-tier weapons, but these four remain the most consistent without specialized builds.

Is Dual Blades still viable in Wilds?

Yes. Dual Blades are B tier for learning curve and sharpness stress, not because they lack damage. With demon mode discipline and sharpness management, they clear every demo hunt comfortably.

Does weapon tier matter in the offline demo?

Only for comfort and speed. The demo is short and gear-limited, so picking a weapon you enjoy beats forcing S-tier choices. Tier lists help if you want the fastest learning path or plan to continue the same main in the full game.

Should I use two S-tier weapons on my Seikret?

Pairing two top-tier weapons works, but complementary pairings often feel better—melee plus Bow, or slashing plus Gunlance shells. Cover elemental gaps and range rather than doubling the same weaknesses.

When was this tier list last updated?

This list reflects Title Update 4 balance during the Prologue Demo window. Capcom continues adjusting shelling, bow shots, and counter damage—recheck after major patches if your main weapon receives notes in the changelog.
